ATTEMPTING STABILITY: EXPERIMENTS IN SIBLING RELATIONALITY
machine-stitched appliqué banners and recorded actions, 2020

In collaboration with my three sisters, we created rudimentary cheerleading formations from our younger years. Personal realities of adulthood–failed relationships, anxiety, divorce, coming-out, and postpartum depression–are rendered into physical acts of trying, balancing, and sometimes sticking the forms for a second or two. The process of lifting and supporting one another is highlighted, as well as the absurdity in attempting these tasks without any skill or grace.

Textile pieces reminiscent of championship banners contain our merged silhouettes taken from still images of the recorded actions. Rather than a record of winning, these banners celebrate the attempt, failure and ephemerality of our process.
